How real is real?

"The belief that one's own view of reality is the only reality is the most dangerous of all delusions" [Paul Watzlawick]

In the book "How real is real?", Paul Watzlawick wrote: << The belief that one's own view of reality is the only reality is the most dangerous of all delusions >>. It means that our perspective of the world is unique, as it is the result of conditionings, as well as assimilations and learnings stemming from our family, context, and culture in which we have been raised. Yet, that perspective is not the only existing, not even the most true, as there are others, parallel if you will, which is related to how others have been educated, shaped by their own context.

In the book "Pragmatic of Human Communication", Paul Watzlawick pinpoint that the pathological communication stems from a misunderstanding between different realities that cannot match. That happens in all sort of relationships, from couples, friends, to international relations. When we miss to see beyond our nose, assuming that our viewpoint is the most real, and the other is in the false, we are not only limiting ourselves but also constricting the growth of the relationship.

In conclusion, with this quote, Watzlawick taught us that a healthy relationship live in discussions not conflicts, in listening not screaming, in compromises not impositions, in being receptive not refusing.
